Yuletide: Egyptian Community Makes Donation to Orphanage

In line with the spirit of giving and their mission to cater to underserved groups in society, the Egyptian Community in Lagos has brought smiles onto the faces of children at Bab-Es-Salam Orphanage in GRA, Ikeja – Lagos with a courtesy call to the facility.

Speaking during the visit, the Commercial First Secretary and Head of Economic & Commercial Office, Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Amr Altantawy spoke about the birth of the initiative:

“We recently got together to establish the Egyptian Community in Nigeria, with a view to creating a platform through which Egyptians living in Nigeria can come together, share in the community spirit, and find ways of making an impact in the communities in which they live.

“Today’s visit to the Bab-Es-Salaam Orphanage is one of the ways we hope to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Nigerian children by giving them a reason to be hopeful and to continue to believe in themselves”, he said.

Expressing his delight while offering gifts to the children, Ambassador Michael Tawadrous, Special Envoy of the World Fund for Development and Planning (WFDP), United Nations OSAA in Nigeria remarked that; “Children are the bedrock of any society, and as such, any investment into their lives goes a long way in securing their future. It is our hope that the modest investment we are making into the lives of these children today will leave a lasting impression in their hearts and contribute to making a difference in laying the foundation for their future.”

The Egyptian Community bequeathed the sum of N500, 000 to the orphanage; forty mattresses, pillows, and sheets, as well as other gift items such as candy, bracelets, drinks, and t-shirts – all of which will go a long way to improve the children’s standard of living.

Also on the ground was a Pediatrician and member of the Egyptian Community in Lagos, Dr. Nashed Atef Nashed of Coptic Hospital Victoria Island, who made himself available to provide free consultations and medical checkups for the children; dispensing the necessary free medications to them accordingly.

Speaking on the choice of the orphanage, the General Manager of Egypt Air, Mr. Muharram Abdel Rahman noted with satisfaction that the Egyptian Community decided to visit Bab-Es-Salam because of its track record of adding value to the lives of defenseless children and young adults.

He concluded that it only seemed right that they contribute, however modestly, to help the managers of the facility continue with the good work.
